Blue Ribbon Downing Street

This is the latest addition to the Blue Ribbon coterie- a small plates joint ideal for post-work or semi-casual drinks and nibbles or even when waiting for a table at Blue Ribbon Bakery right across the street. Dishes include baked escargots and short ribs as well as cheese plates.

Dennis Foy
313 Church Street between Walker & Lispenard Streets
Dennis Foy’s new outpost is his eponymous French-influenced Tribeca spot. Menu-pleasers include the salted cured terrine of foie gras “Eis and Snow”, or the braised beef short ribs with baby carrots. With an extensive wine list as well as a private room for parties, Dennis Foy’s is a must-try for elegant evenings on the town.  

Fig & Olive Meatpacking
420 W 13th Street between Washington Street and 9th Avenue
Fig & Olive comes downtown, and the atmosphere is as cozy and intimate as ever with super attentive service. And the dishes complement the olive oils to a tee- ham carpaccio, white thyme chicken or artichoke tapenade. In the summer, try the fresh figs.

71 Spring Street, between Crosby and Lafayette Street
Fr.og refers to French origin- highlighting the cuisine of French colonies. Think Vietnam , Morocco and Lebanon- with an open kitchen and an extended bar to match. Didier Virot is at the helms, embracing the French roots with a twist.

Gemma
The Bowery Hotel, 335 Bowery Street
Designed by Taavo Somer of Freeman’s fame, the latest chic Italian eatery is set to bring alive this corner of Bowery once again with much buzz surrounding the opening.

Graffiti

Pasty chef extraordinaire Jehangir Mehta (formerly of Aix and Jean Georges) serves up his specialties with irreverent dishes such as green tomato salad with salty caramel tapioca. Hence the name graffiti!

The House
121 E 17th Street at Irving Place
The House is located in a three-story carriage house and is hailed for it’s extensive wine list- you can even steal a glance into the wine cellar in the sublevel. As such, it is mostly renowned as a wine bar. The parlor level has fireside seating and the top level porthole windows with open skylights.

The Inn LW12
7 Ninth Avenue at 12th Street
A brand new gastropub in the West Village brought to us by Jeffrey Jah (Lotus, Double Seven) and Lyman Carter. Chef Andy Bennett and “consulting chef” Daniel Boulud serve up a French and Canadian-inspired menu in chalet-esque surroundings, which spawn over three floors.

Little Owl
90 Bedford Street at Grove Street
This intimate 32-seat venue (9 tables!) is the talk of town, proposing seasonal American fare and sparking talk of much-needed customer driven venues such as this one. Chef Joey Campanaro, formerly of Pace and The Harrison proposes great pleasers such as pork chops and mini-appetizer sandwiches.

Morandi
211 Waverly Place at Charles Street
Keith McNally’s latest is his first attempt at Italian fare- and after the institutions that he has made Pastis, Schiller’s Liquor Bar and Balthazar into, this one is a must-try. Chef Jody Williams, formerly of Gusto, Giorgone and Il Buco, puts her trademark stamp on the menu, offering such constants as spaghetti with clams and fritto misto and meatballs. Yet the offerings also go above and beyond with such hits as braised sea bream with tomatoes and olives. Morandi is set to be the latest of McNally’s fixtures- this time in the heart of the West Village .

When you call to make a reservation at this brand new haut japonais, they’ll ask you to confirm which course you’d like to try- all in order to serve you better and procure fresh ingredients. And if you’re a fan of raw, this is a sure bet.

Soho ’s newest and latest trendy spot- how about pretzel ice cream with mustard seed granola? Or potato chips with country lemonade? Eel and duck with chocolate consommé? After earning his patches at WD50, Sam Mason brings us all these eclectic mixes and more.

Anchor Bar
310 Spring Street at Greenwich
From the founders of the Sophomore clothing line (Page Six Six Six, anyone?), we bring you Anchor Bar! This spot is so hush hush no one even knows about it as yet, apart from the celebs who hang out there such as Johnny Knoxville and Drea DeMatteo. Decked out in an Americana meets Colonial style, they serve interesting drinks such as the D.Stahl, Bijou’s Crack and the Daily Mandy, all named after their friends. We’ll leave it up to you to divine who is who.

Arena

Arena adds yet another somewhat novel concept to NYC nightlife by proposing its digital plasma walls as virtual canvases, enabling anyone to throw any type of party they want. You can have your face plastered all over for a birthday party- even outside! And the best part is you’ll constantly feel like you’re coming to a different place as the projections will continuously be changing.

Bowery Hotel Bar

Be one of the first to go have a drink at the brand-new Bowery Hotel, the latest boutique powerhouse hotel in Manhattan .

The Box

The Box is New York ’s best-kept secret, where the social set have been out and about in recent times to celebrate themselves and their friends. An amazing décor and an extremely high level of buzz adds up to a grandiose night out.

Death & Co.
433 E 6th St between First Avenue and Avenue A
The East Village ’s latest lounge- complete with chandeliers, marble-top bar and Prohibition Era feel. There are also select booths for intimacy and small plates by Chef Jacques Godin. The head bartender is Philip Ward, formerly of Pegu and Flatiron, and the whole place adds up to having somewhat of a mysterious yet chic vibe.

Gold Bar
389 Broome Street at Kenmare Street
The same developers as Cain bring to us NoLita hotspot Gold Bar- a spot rife with macabre yet much-discussed décor. Everything is indeed gold-colored as the name attests and more that 3,000 gold-covered skulls are spread out around the venue. Suitable for an impromptu after-work meeting- with aperitivi and other Italian snacks on offer- yet also open till 4 am for those who want to further indulge their Dantesque impulses.

Star Lounge

Nestled under the Hotel Chelsea, Star Lounge is where Serena was formerly located. The space is much talked about and has already played host to a number of fashionable parties- it’s set to be the new hush, hush secret nightspot to be at…

Now Playing

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
This carefree musical allows for audience participation as four members are chosen each night to compete against the cast in a mock spelling bee. The show accurately yet satirically depicts parents’ obsessive quests to enable their zany kids to take home the gold. The show even holds periodic “Parent Teacher Conferences” where R-rated word usage limits entry to those above 17 years of age. 

A Chorus Line
Broadway’s previously longest running show is back. A new production of the 1975 musical about 25 dancers competing for 8 spots which has continued to impress so far by the sheer vivacity of the dancing and energy of the songs. 

The Apple Tree - closing March 11th
A musical in three acts where each act has it’s own story yet is tied together through a common theme. Stars Kristin Chenoweth.

Avenue Q
The 2004 Tony Award-winning musical which features a cast of live actors and puppets. The story revolves around Princeton , a fresh-out-of-college puppet whose affections are torn between monster-next-door Kate and chanteuse Lucy T. Slut. 

Beauty and the Beast
Disney Theatricals presents a musical based on the 1991 Disney film.

Chicago
This Bob Fosse favorite tells the dark saga of chorus girl Roxie Hart, who murders her lover, avoids prison and, with the help of her huckster lawyer Billy Flynn, becomes a musical star. 

The Coast of Utopia
Tom Stoppard’s trilogy of plays, Voyage, Shipwreck and Salvage, about philosophical debate in pre-revolutionary 19th century Russia , plays at the Lincoln Center Theater until May 13th. Catch the marathon performances where all three plays are performed in sequence on Saturdays March 3rd, March 10th, March 24th, March 31st, April 7th, April 21st, April 28th and May 5th only. Starring Billy Crudup, Ethan Hawke, Amy Irving.

The Color Purple
Marsha Norman’s adaptation of Alice Walker’s best-selling 1982 novel. The design elements are vibrant and attractive, and the performers sing and dance with great enthusiasm. American Idol 3 winner Fantasia Barrino is set to begin her run as Celie on April 10th.

Company
A revival of the 1970 musical about so much more than just a bachelor and his journey in finding love with that special someone.  

Curtains - opens March 22nd
A whodunit-type musical set during the 1959 pre-Broadway run of an upcoming hit unfolds in a comedic manner when the ceremoniously untalented leading lady is murdered during curtain call on opening night. The investigating detective then becomes heavily enmeshed in the production. Hilarity ensues. Starring David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk.

The Drowsy Chaperone
Winner of 5 Tony awards in 2006, this musical begins when a die-hard musical-theater fan plays his favorite cast album on his turntable, and the music literary bursts to life in his living room, telling the rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, her true love.

Grey Gardens
A new musical based on the 1975 Maysles brothers documentary “Grey Gardens” tells the story of two indomitable individuals, the eccentric Edith Bouvier Beale and her adult daughter “Little” Edie (both close relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis).

Hairspray
This vibrant larger-than-life musical takes place in 1962 Baltimore – the ‘50s are out and change is in the air. Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair, and an even bigger heart, has only one passion – to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show” and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. Expect much new buzz around it as the John Travolta movie arrives in summer 2007.

Jersey Boys
This nostalgic behind-the-music tale is accompanied by the Four Seasons’ infectiously energetic 1960s tunes.

Journey’s End
A WWI drama about trench warfare spanning four days spent in a dugout, this gem is considered to be the quintessential war play and is often hailed by academia. With Hugh Dancy and Boyd Gaines.

Les Miserables
A musical based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo returns to Broadway for a limited six month run through August.

The Lion King
Disney’s extravaganza and family musical by excellence! Experience the tale of Simba and his journey through life- truly one of Broadway’s legendary shows.

The Little Dog Laughed
Douglas Carter Beane’s new comedy about an aspiring Hollywood star with a secret- the fact that he is gay… Comedy ensues as his ambitious agent plots to get him to the top all while trying to make him steer clear of potential pitfalls in the form of amorous men…

Mamma Mia!
Almost two dozen hits from the ‘70s pop sensation ABBA form the spine of this worldwide smash, which book writer Catherine Johnson has feebly fleshed out into a mother-daughter comedy-drama. Meryl Streep has just signed up to star in the movie version.

Mary Poppins
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! The smash London musical, a co-production of Disney Theatrical and Cameron Mackintosh, is playing to rave reviews at the historic New Amsterdam Theatre.  

Monty Python’s Spamalot
Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, this musical tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table in that quintessentially uproarious manner. 

The Phantom of the Opera
Andrew Lloyd Weber’s award winning musical of Gaston Leroux’s 1911 novel is set in 19th century Paris . It is also now the longest-running show on Broadway.

Prelude to a Kiss - opens March 8th through April 22nd for a short engagement
The Roundabout Theater Company presents a new production of Craig Lucas’ romantic drama in which a couple’s storybook romance and wedding is portrayed. Yet after a mysterious elderly man appears and kisses the bride at the wedding, the two lovers are sent on an unforgettable magical journey- and their love is put to the test.

The Producers
Based on the Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, The Producers is the story of down-on-his-luck theatrical producer Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a mousy accountant. Together, they hatch the ultimate scam: Raise more money than you need for a sure-fire Broadway fiasco...and pocket the difference.

Rent
A tale of AIDs and friendship in the 1990s East Village is recounted in this long-running saga based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme.

Spring Awakening
Duncan Sheik’s controversial musical about coming of age and sexuality. 

Talk Radio - opens March 11th
This is the first Broadway staging of Eric Bogosian’s 1987 play which is focuses on a controversial late night Cleveland radio shock-jock. Starring Liev Schreiber.

Tarzan
With music by Phil Collins, Disney’s musical recounts the familiar tale of Tarzan and Jane. 

Translations closing March 11th
Translations is set in 1833 Ireland , telling of the conflict between Irish and British- something that may still ring true today.

The Vertical Hour closing March 11th
A new play about an American war correspondent turned academic who now teaches Political Studies at Yale.

Wicked
This Tony Award Winning musical is the prequel to the Wizard of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in; two girls meet in the land of Oz- one, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of how these two unlikely friends grew to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

110 in the Shade
Based on the play The Rainmaker, this musical revival tells the story of a drought-stricken town from which a young girl promises her love in return for some rain.

A Moon for the Misbegotten - opens April 9th
Eugene O’Neill’s much-hailed play is back in this latest incarnation starring Kevin Spacey. Thought of by some as a sequel to Long Day’s Journey Into Night, the tale is set on a Connecticut farmhouse in the 1920s. Starring Kevin Spacey and Eve Best.

Deuceopens May 6th
Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes star as two retired tennis players in this Terrence McNally original set to debut in May.

Frost/Nixon opens April 22nd
Depicts one of the most noteworthy, talked-about television interviews in history in which Frost was actually able to extract a confession.

Grease
Rydell High is back on Broaday! For those of us who have followed “You’re the One that I Want”, tv viewers get to pick the new Danny and Sandy…

Inherit the Windpreviews begin March 19th
This 1955 courtroom drama by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E Lee is a fictionalized retelling of the famous 1925 “Monkey Trial” in which science teacher John Scopes was tried and convicted for teaching Darwin ’s theory of evolution, violating a Tennessee law that forbade teaching any theory that conflicted with the Biblical conception of Divine Creation.

Legally Blonde - previews April 3rd
Sorority star Elle Woods doesn’t take “no” for an answer in this musical based on the novel by Amanda Brown and film of the same name.  When her boyfriend dumps her or someone more “serious”, Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law.

The Pirate Queen - previews March 6th
Riverdream will present this new musical which tells the real-life story of the legendary Grace O’Malley, who led an extraordinary life as a pirate chieftain, lover and mother in 16th century Ireland .

Princesses
A tale of spoiled Upper East Side girls who’d rather shop than go to class- until the latest teen heartthrob arrives to direct the school play.

Shrek: The Musical
Shrek and Princess Fiona come to the Great White Way!

The Year of Magical Thinking - previews March 6th
Vanessa Redgrave is presented in the this one-woman show by Joan Didion, based on her 2005 memoir of the same name about the year following the death of her husband, John Gregory Dunne, and the illness of their daughter, Quintana.
